Jason Kenney's Lies

According to media reports, Jason Kenney cheated to win the UCP leadership and lied about it afterwards. If he was willing to lie to his own party members, that begs the question: what else has he been lying about. As it turns out, lots!

Kenney has been lying when he says Alberta is an economic basket case under the NDP. The truth is we have the biggest GDP per capita (by far). We also had the highest growth rates in 2017 and 2018 and are expected to lead the country between 2020-40.

Kenney has been lying to Albertans the NDP has caused investment to “flee the province.” The truth is that Alberta continues to lead the country in per capita business investment.

Kenney has been lying to Albertans about losing oil & gas jobs to Texas. The truth is Texas lost more jobs when global oil prices collapsed than we did, and fewer of their jobs have come back.

Kenney has been lying to Albertans when he says they’re “poorer because of the NDP.” The truth is Albertans continue to be have the highest incomes in Canada by far.

Kenney has been lying to Albertans when he says the $15 minimum wage has been a ‘job killer.’ Despite the recession, the number of people working in low-wage occupations hasn’t fallen – they’re just earning more. Which was the whole point.

Jason Kenney has been lying to Albertans when he says the carbon tax has been a “job killer.” As this chart clearly shows, it was the price of oil that led to slower investment and job losses, NOT the introduction of the carbon tax.

Jason Kenney has been lying to Albertans when he says spending is “out of control” under the NDP. As this chart shows, spending has increased to cover inflation and population growth, and that’s it. The NDP didn’t make the recession worse by cutting; but they didn’t go on a spending spree, either.

Jason Kenney has been lying about the cause of our deficits. As this chart shows, they’re the result of a collapse in royalty revenue (caused by the collapse in global oil prices) NOT the result of increased spending.

Jason Kenney has been lying about Alberta’s debt. He points out that Alberta will have a $95B debt in four years under the NDP plan. But he fails to mention that will still be the lowest per capita debt in the country…and that the UCP debt over the same period would be $86B. The difference is that the NDP would spend on people and the UCP would spend on tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy.

Jason Kenney has been lying about the “Alberta Advantage.” The real “Alberta Advantage” was that we used windfall oil and gas royalty revenue to finance irresponsible tax cuts for the wealthy and give the (false) impression that we could afford above-average services with below-average taxes.

Jason Kenney has been lying to Albertans about his party’s plans for overtime pay. He denies it, but his plan would clearly give employers a mechanism for getting around time-and-a-half guarantees to overtime.

Jason Kenney has been lying about the NDP law that, for the first time ever, extended basic workplace rights and protections to paid farm workers. The majority of farmers came around to see the value of this legislation. Kenney just doesn’t care.

Jason Kenney has been lying about the NDP plan for the Bighorn Wilderness area. The government is not taking away anyone’s rights to ride. They’re just saying people should be required to follow common sense rules to preserve our parks.
